BHC is a successful and friendly hockey club based in the seaside town of Ballina on the NSW east coast of Australia.

Our Club

We are one of the oldest clubs in our Association established in 1930. We have senior, veteran and summer twilight sides offering elite, development and social hockey. We have thriving junior teams for children aged 4-17. Whatever your age, whatever your ability, whatever your ambition you can enjoy hockey with us.

Turf bookings

The complex provides an international standard artificial hockey turf, club house with change room facilities, canteen/kitchen and ample parking all of which can be hired out to community groups. Please click to email our turf manager

FAQ

It is a typical winter sport – usually around 6 months of competition.
It varies depending on coaching availability however Women have been training on Tuesday nights for many years and the Men train on Wednesdays. Junior teams train on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5-6pm.

Junior hockey is Minkey, Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16.
Senior hockey typically has 3 grades, players chosen based on skill level, C grade, B grade, and A grades in both Mens and Womens.
If there are additional players, we can sometimes include an A-Reserve grade.

Juniors play on Saturday mornings and can be between 8am and 12pm. Seniors are played on Saturdays from midday, some grades are played on Friday night
Games are shared between the Ballina turf at Bentinick Street in Ballina and Hepburn Park in Goonellabah. All games are played on a synthetic surface which also makes the sport a little less susceptible to weather events
Absolutely not, we love seeing new players and hope you will come down and give it a go.
You will need a mouthguard, shin pads and hockey stick. You will purchase a uniform when you sign up.
Yes, we have a social co-ordinator who is always busy organising events for our senior and junior teams. This year we are organising movie night for the kids as well as 2-3 mid-season functions for our seniors. We also have twilight hockey which runs during the summer months on a Thursday at 6pm, there is also walking hockey for those who want to play but cannot run.

Registration of players and officials through Hockey NSW includes coverage by their player accident insurance policy. Personal injury cover provides financial assistance in three key areas:

  • non-Medicare medical benefits
  • loss of income benefits
  • capital benefits

In case of injury

  • Inform your coach/team manager about the injury, and if relevant, note the injury on the match card
  • Contact the Club Secretary as soon as possible and report your injury in writing
  • Note the injury will need to be reported to the insurers within 30 days, so don’t delay
  • Log on to the Hockey NSW website and submit your claim.
